Objectives  At the end of the session the students should be able to – ·      Understand the significance of elderly healthcare. ·      Describe key components of the national programme for elderly. ·      Discuss the implementation and challenges of the programme. ·      Identify roles and responsibilities of healthcare providers in elderly care.
Introduction (10 minutes)Welcome and Objectives: Briefly introduce the session and objectives. Icebreaker Activity: Ask students to share experiences they, or their family members had with elderly healthcare.
Lecture: Overview of Elderly Healthcare (20 Minutes)Presentation: Discuss the demographics and health challenges of the elderly population. ·      Ageing population statistics. ·      Common health issues among the elderly. ·      Importance of specialized care for the elderly. ·      National and global perspective.
National Programme for Elderly (30 Minutes)Ø Interactive Lecture: Introduce the National Programme for Health Care of the Elderly (NPHCE) using slides. ·         Historical Background. ·         Objectives and Goals ·         Key features and components of the programme ·         Roles at different levels of healthcare: primary, secondary, and tertiary ·         Implementation strategies and tools ·         Budget and funding Ø Q & A Session: Allow students to ask questions and discuss key points.
Group Activity: Case Studies (30 Minutes)Ø Divide students in groups: Provide each group with a case study related to elderly care under the national programme. Ø Task: Analyze the case study and answer the following questions: ·         What are the main issues presented in the case? ·         How can the national programme address these issues? ·         What role do healthcare providers play in this scenario? Ø Presentation: Each group presents their case and findings to the class (5 minutes per group).
Role-Playing Activity (20 Minutes)Ø Scenario Setup: Create role-play scenarios based on typical situations encountered in elderly care. ·         Example scenarios: Conducting a home visit, counselling a family, managing chronic diseases Ø Students Participation: Assign roles (doctor, patient, family member) and have students act out the scenarios. Ø Debrief: Discuss what went well, challenges faced, and key learning points.
Discussion: Challenges and Solutions (10 minutes)Ø Open Discussion: Engage students in discussing the challenges in implementing elderly care programmes. ·         Infrastructure issues ·         Training and capacity building ·         Socio-cultural barriers
Conclusion and Recap (10 minutes)Ø Summary: Recap the key points covered in the session. Ø Take-Home message: Emphasize the importance of dedicated care for the elderly and the role of future doctors in improving elderly healthcare. Ø Feedback: Collect feedback from students on the session.
